Modeling & Acting 101 - A Model/Actor's Diary

The path towards becoming an Abercrombie & Fitch model isn't exactly traditional and even I am intrigued by the casting process they use. For those of you that want to know how to become an A&F model, you'll want to check out this post. 1. You have to be 18 or older. Unfortunately, the nature of A&F shoots are pretty sexy and even adult in a sense and as such, their models are required to be of age. (Of course there is A&F kid models but that comes later). 2. You have to work at an A&F store. No lie! In order to be considered for any of the company's ad campaigns and photoshoots, they actually turn to their own employees to recruit models. So if you're looking for a job in retail and feel you've got what it takes, fill out a job application at your nearest A&F store and get hired. I did the online catalog shoot for 49 Square Miles a few months ago but they have finally updated the website and my photos are on the main slideshow when you get to the home page. Yay! So I thought I'd share. To jog your memory, 49 Square Miles is a San Francisco-based company that specializes in custom, hand made leather handbags, belts and accessories. Their products are for the fashionistas at heart and even though I'm not a huge purse fan, I become a groupie when I saw how gorgeous their handbags were! I had the awesome opportunity to be hired as a makeup/beauty model for the Last Looks Makeup Academy. They are a makeup school and the latest hands-on session was held in a hotel in San Francisco. I did this gig a while back but I just received the CD of images so I wanted to blog about it and share. In a nutshell, a handful of the school's students got the chance to work with a handful of models and practice their makeup techniques. In addition to that a professional photographer was on hand with an indoor studio setup to capture each of the models' looks so that the students could have images to begin building their portfolios with (and for the models' use of course). There were about a 10-12 students and as many models. If the time limit was used wisely each student would have the chance to do a makeup look on at least 3-4 models. (This post is for both freelance and agency represented models but I'm writing this mainly to address freelance models since they have the challenge of representing themselves.) Modeling is a business and in order to be successful, you'll have to be responsible for making your career run as smoothly as possible. In my time and experience, I have come to rely on the following items to help me stay as organized as possible (I may update this list from time to time if needed): Day Planner Whether you have a fancy PDA or go with the old school hard copy day planner (like me), you will need to have your schedule organized. Be sure to mark down all events related to modeling such as castings, shoots and meetings with photographers, stylists, etc. You'll come to find yourself living by your day planner--having events recorded in this manner will keep you from double booking and also help you plan your agenda with stuff that's not related to modeling.
